Knowing that you are getting close to being promoted can be a huge motivator. It’s something that sets people on “I’m-on-fire-mode”, increasing productivity, commitment with your team and is always an ego booster.
On the other hand, if this rush is not appropriately handled it can also become a threat to your current employment status.
Time ago, I had a staff that had finished college a few months before being hired. He was also relatively new. Having worked for no more than 6 months, he was exceeding all expectations; people from other areas became interested in him and started to ask me for feedback. He was on a collision course with a promotion.

Hi Everyone, I am very pleased to announce that Fernando Tarnogol will be officially coming on board the Gradkin team as a regular blogger. Some of you might have read his previous riveting content for Gradkin’s Blog, but for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure, you’re in for a treat.
Fernando is a Psychology graduate from the University of Buenos Aires and also studied Human Resources. That I believe is why his insights are so thought-provoking and enthralling for job-seekers and professionals from all walks of life. His articles fuse quite naturally the delicacies of the human psyche with experiences that we all face in our careers. He also provides an experiential understanding of careers backed by theoretical findings and research.
He currently works for the Devereux Foundation, the biggest mental health care provider in the USA, where he has been coordinating and managing some of the foundation’s programmes.
One thing I’ve noticed about psychology majors also, is that they are information enthusiasts…and Fernando is no different. He reads profusely in his spare time on anything from quantum physics to ancient civilizations . A true information junkie, his close friends have commented that his tastes are dissimilar to the point of incoherence. Naturally this knowledge dispenses a unique perspective in his writing.
When Fernando isn’t buried in some obscure science journal or hard-bound almanac, he likes to travel (visited over 36 countries), spend time with his girlfriend and friends and also plays soccer; considering he’s Argentinian though, the last one doesn’t really come as a surprise.
Fernando, it’s a pleasure to have you on board, and I’m confident that I speak for Gradkin’s audience when I say that we look forward to your posts.
5. Become a content provider – this point is a corollary to the previous one. Rather than flood your news stream with inane remarks that add no value to people’s lives, provide links to insightful articles and videos.
Most people on Facebook are really only offline friends with 20% of their online friends. Hence, the majority of your network isn’t going to care about the everyday bits and pieces of your life. You’re much more likely to be listened to if your focus is on what others are interested in consuming.
Generally the links and resources you provide others are also indicative of your passions and interests. An employer therefore that views your news stream is able to get a much clearer picture of your personality and ultimately whether you would be a good cultural fit for the organisation. In a previous post I elaborated on the increasing trend by hiring managers to screen candidates using social media. As this strategy emerges here in Asia, many young job-seekers are perplexed as to how they can prevent themselves falling through the rabbit-hole when using social media tools.
Practically every single student here in Singapore is on Facebook, and most would limit their activity to social interactions and frivolity with friends. It’s rare to find job-seekers network or leverage their Facebook profile to advance their career search, in fact it probably wouldn’t have occurred to most that it’s even possible. For every person that you ask about online reputation you’ll get a different opinion as to whether it matters in your job search, or life for that matter. I’m of the opinion that young job-seekers should be very wary of information they post online as it may come back to haunt them when they least expect it. There’s considerable discussion around this issue, so I’m going to elucidate the subject over a series of posts on online reputation. Rather than rely on conjecture to put my arguments forward, let me reference a recent survey commissioned by Microsoft.
The survey studies how recruiters and HR professionals use online reputational information in their candidate review processes, and how consumers feel about this use of their information.
Approximately 1,100 HR Professionals and 1,300 Consumers were surveyed from the USA, UK, Germany and France.

We’ve teamed up with the good folks at Radio Pulze to present a weekly show on NUS campus radio about careers. The show known as “No Reservations” will cover a broad range of subjects to aid students in their future career endeavours.
